Greenland 1994

Deutsch
Nine days at the west coast. Excursions with helicopter and boat, because there are no connecting roads.

Disko-Bay

Even if a T-shirt may be warm enough on a summer day with 24 hours of sunshine, don't think about taking a bath in the clear water. It's no wonder that most Eskimos can't swim.

Ilulissat

This little town is popular destination, because a nearby glacier delivers 25 million tons of ice into the sea each day. Some icebergs drift into the small fishing harbor and stop alongside the small boats.

Lichen,

moss and grass are the main plants in the coastal area that is not covered by the up to 3000 m (10000 ft) thick ice shield of central Greenland. When it's wet, walking over the lichen will be as slippery as walking over the ice.

Iceberg

From a low-flying helicopter it is easy to see, that the larger part of an iceberg is below the waters surface.

Uummannaq

The Greenlandic alphabet has only 18 letters. So words with unpronounceable letter combinations are quite common. There are boat trips departing from the island village of Uummannaq to remote Eskimo dwellings.
